We can distinguish two different karst areas in Urzulei, one East and the other West, separated by a clear strip of Paleozoic granitic and metamorphic rocks. A total of over 300 caves have been registered in these two areas. In the following paragraphs we will describe the most important of these caves, starting South and moving northward, like the flow direction of the waters that are at their origin.

International Speleologic Meeting Urzulei 2019

All traces, even the smaleest ones leave a sign on this world.
Ethics, respect of places space and time…..
reflections in the dark……….

During the International Speleologic Meeting, Urzulei will show the best of its history, cuisine, tradition and territory.
It will be possible to taste wonderful food, admire high quality handicraft and enjoy an uncontaminated nature: the historic centre, its Murales similar to windows to the past, the sixth century churches, the handicraft products, such as knives, tapestry and carpets, wooden works and, above all, the original asphodel baskets. Genuine foods with an ancient flavour will surprise and delight you with exclusive dishes of our tradition.
And for trekking and wild nature lovers, the possibility to make countless excursions and tours.
Longevity origins from lifestyle. Urzulei, included into the world Blue Zone, is among the villages with more centenarian in Sardinia. The reasons of this longevity are in the quality of social relationships, but also and above all in the quality of food, principally based on preparation originating from raw material of excellent quality typical of our territory. Here, longevity is not only for men, but even for plants, such as the thousand-year old yew and the thousand-year old wild vine (perhaps the most ancient ever discovered in the world). It has its roots in a territory so poor and harsh, master in the use of the few resources available. The Supramonte of Urzulei has even given back one of the most significative
small bronze statuettes of nuragic culture, the so called Mother of the Killed (now exhibited in the Archeological National Museum in Cagliari).
Today this territory, wonderfully kept and considered as one of the wildest in the Mediterraneum, is appreciated by travellers from all over the world for its Canyon (Gorropuis among the biggest in Europe), caves, the rare endemisms and plant and animal biodiversity.

Urzulei, like its territory, has protected its history, culture and ancient traditions. Verbal memory has handed down over time the handicraft traditions that, thanks to skillful hands, have come to us. Skillful hands transform asphodel in baskets to contain and carry wheat
and flour. Skillful hands create baskets to offer cakes, to carry the dowry for brides and babies. Baskets with simple manufacturing for daily life ao very valuable for great occasions. To asphodel, today has been given value in other areas, such as weaving, to create real pieces of art and to create modern design objects. When the ancient tradition meets innovation……

Across the streets of Urzulei you can find the Murales Path “Memòria e Identidade” (Memory and Identity) that was born in 2003 thanks to the initiative and the artisic direction of the Cultural Association  "Sòciu po su jocu de sa murra". This artistic project
follows consistently few rules: reproduction without interpretation and in the most faithful way possible of white and black pictures that portrait people or scenes linked to the community history and culture.
An aspect which characterizes the Muralism in Urzulei is the particular shade realized on the profile of timages which gives to the works an almost oneiric aspect like flashes, like
crossings on the veil of the past, on the community history. Among the chosen pictures three of them stand out: the photographic masterpieces realized in 1934 by the linguist and photograph from Friuli Ugo Pellis and two of the pioneer of the Supramonte speleology,  Luigi Donini from Bologna. To give further renown to the project  Memory and Identity  is the signing on several works of the muralist  Angelo Pilloni from San Sperate.

Inside the heart of the village, an itinerant ethnographic museum proposes to tourists what long time ago characterized the little village at the foot of Mount Gruthas.
The old Carabinieri barrack, the school, the post office and the town hall with the doctor's office and the mill live again among the old houses, a time ruined and now came back to the antique beauty. A “How we were” in a full-blown with fifteen exposition points: characterized by the presnce of the utensils used by shepherds, peasants and artisans and by the reproposition of traditions still alive in
the community, first among the others, the art of production of “s'iscraria”, the asphodel used to realize baskets.
